The city of Oviedo traces its historical roots back to 1865 when homesteaders settled along the shores of Lake Jesup. A post master chose the name Oviedo in 1879 to honor Spain’s historic university city of the same name. For a long time, the city’s economy relied heavily on celery and citrus farming before shifting toward a suburban residential model. Oviedo incorporated as a city in 1925 and has since grown rapidly while preserving its rural heritage. A unique cultural feature of the city is its population of wild chickens that freely roam the historic downtown streets. A top attraction in the community is the Lukas Butterfly Encounter, a massive, enclosed warm-house filled with native and exotic butterflies. For transportation, Oviedo is situated 22 miles northeast of Orlando International Airport (MCO). The city is exceptionally close to Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB), sitting just 12 miles away. Driving southwest to visit Disney Springs spans a distance of roughly 33 miles via the State Road 417 tollway. The closest coastal retreat is Cocoa Beach, located approximately 45 miles southeast via State Road 528.
